Intercom 419
The CUCM intercom function allows a user to call a line of another user, which autoanswers
with the line muted. The line must be configured as an intercom line, which causes
the destination line to pick up in a one-way whisper conversation. A one-way whisper
conversation does not allow the calling party to hear the manager to which the intercom call
was routed. The recipient can press the Intercom softkey to convert the whisper
conversation into a two-way intercom call.
Intercom is supported only on Cisco Type B phone models 7970, 79x1, 79x2, 79x5, and
7915.
The intercom feature involves the following configuration steps:
Step 1 Create an intercom partition.
Step 2 Verify the automatically generated intercom CSS or optionally replace it
with a customized intercom CSS.
Step 3 Create the intercom DNs.
Step 4 Assign intercom DNs to phones.
Navigate to Call Routing > Intercom > Route Partition from CUCM Administration to
add one or more intercom partitions. Intercom partitions are created in the same way as
normal partitions. Enter the partition name and description separated by a comma.
Assuming standard point-to-point intercom lines, one intercom partition is required
per intercom line. Figure 16-15 shows the configuration of intercom partitions.
Navigate to Call Routing > Intercom > Intercom Calling Search Space from CUCM
Administration to configure an intercom CSS. This is required only if an intercom phone
button should support multiple intercom targets and if access control is required to limit the
targets that are available to the intercom phone button. Figure 16-16 shows the automatically
created intercom CSS, which was created after the partition had been added in the
previous step.
NOTE When you create an intercom partition, the Administration interface automatically
generates a corresponding intercom CSS with the same name. Customized
intercom CSSs are required only if an intercom phone button should support multiple
intercom targets and if access control is required to limit the targets that are available to
the intercom phone button. The automatically generated intercom CSS does not need
to be changed for a standard implementation of point-to-point intercom lines.

Navigate to Call Routing > Intercom > Intercom Directory Number in CUCM
Administration to configure a new intercom DN. An intercom DN range will be specified.
The values for the From and To fields can be the same if only one intercom DN is being
added. Point-to-point intercom lines require a range of two DNs to be specified. Select the
intercom partition, and enter a description and alerting name for caller identification
(CLID) display. Select an intercom CSS.
If the range was not limited to a single DN, the description and alerting names should not
be specific per intercom endpoint, or these values should be changed on the individual DNs
after the range has been added.
After you add the intercom DN range, each intercom DN is shown in the list of intercom
DNs and can be configured on its own. The intercom range is only a configuration tool to
add multiple intercom DNs with similar settings in a single step. Intercom DN
configuration is illustrated in Figure 16-17.

The line appearance of the intercom DN is not stored with the intercom DN but at the
individual phone intercom line. Therefore, all fields are blank, and the entered values
update only the intercom line appearance at the currently configured phone. Enter the
display text that the receiving phone of an intercom call will display and the line text
label that will be displayed next to the intercom phone button on the phone display.
A speed dial is set to the target of the intercom connection at the administrative assistant
phone. If no speed dial is entered, the target intercom DN has to be dialed after pressing the
intercom phone button. If a speed dial is configured, the intercom connection is immediately
created after the user presses the intercom phone button. A speed dial is the preferable
way to initiate an intercom call
